Hongyan considers himself still one hundred percent a goose, just trapped in a human body. All his instincts were and remain goose-centric. But the longer he spends in human form, the more his mind and heart get complicated by… humanity (derogatory). Unfortunately, the only person he has interacted with significantly since the curse is the Wizard Conquest Zanderbar, his mysterious and fey benefactor, so his exemplar of human behavior is... the Wizard.
Arrogant, impulsive, and full of goosely malice, Hongyan will stop at nothing to find the person who has been his only lifeline since this nightmare of a curse started. He’s quite sure that the Wizard can explain the confusing emotions he has been experiencing and return him to his true self, but on the way, he plans to respond to that confusion with FURY.
The creature presently known as Hongyan was once a simple wild goose, living in a large pond near a village. He was well-known for his mischief; the villagers referred to him as “That Goose” with irritation and dismay as he befouled their gardens, disturbed their peace, and pilfered their belongings. But this idyllic life was not to last…
On a fine Tuesday afternoon, the goose happened upon a small, secluded cottage. It was filled with interesting shiny objects, bundles of plants, and bubbling containers that called out for the intervention of a meddlesome beak or wing. Without fear of consequences that had heretofore never touched him, the goose spent hours investigating and rearranging the cottage -- only to be suddenly apprehended by its inhabitant!
The witch Marjoram Aniselle LXIX was infuriated to find a large waterfowl wreaking havoc on her experiments and spells, and immediately tried to chase him off with a broom. The goose, disinclined to be chased, retaliated with more violence -- culminating in stealing and swallowing a sparkling ruby given to the witch by her mother. Outraged beyond reason, the witch cast a wicked curse.
Gone were his beautiful wings! Gone, his elegant basal knob and his aristocratic beak! Horrifically, the goose found himself in the hideous form… of a human! He did not pause to listen to the witch’s lecture on punishments, learning a sapient being’s humility, and undoing the curse -- he merely ran back to his pond, unsteady on his unfamiliar legs.
But his goose brethren did not recognize him and drove him away, honking in derision. The humanoids in the village yelled at him as before, but now they said things like “Sir are you okay?!” and “YOU CAN’T JUMP IN THE FOUNTAIN.” Confused and frightened, the goose fled to the woods…
...Where he quickly became lost. Everything looked different from his new height, and he had no wings to help him fly above the canopy. In despair, he flopped down in a clearing and honked piteously from his inadequate human beak.
